The process of learning
For The Mini Jam 84, (Hosted by ZahranW, KingW and ManuGamesDev) I chose to make a game I call "I AM SOAP". Now I am not the greatest at coding, but I am decent at art, and the game is for a game jam. Looking at the scenario, then, graphics are a pretty important category in my opinion. So after I had the main idea and then some, I got to work on the player. I got a basic standing position before too long and then realized it... I would need to animate the player. I had never done this before, so I really didn't know what to do. But I did know that it was an undeniably important factor. A character that miraculously jumps and runs but doesn't move a muscle? That may sound impressive, but it doesn't look pretty at all. And pretty is what I needed. And using the Unity3D Game Engine, the first step was to go to the Unity Learn website, a wonderous place filled with tons of helpful learning content. Long story short, I found a tutorial, and learned a new move: Animate. And, looking at my project I now think "What would it even be like if I did not know how to animate those sprites." And I am happy I took the time to gain that new skill.
Along the way to completion I faced many challenges such as this. None of which were to beastly to overcome. But each one has taught me more. All I have learned I can now use later, maybe in another game jam, maybe in some personal project. With all this being said, I can begin to make bigger projects. by learning how to do the small things fast you have more time to work on learning new things. And after you learn those new things, you will begin to get faster at doing those, and the process continues.
All in all, what a great Jam it has been. Though the voting is not yet over(At the time of this writing), even if I make it in last, I had so much fun creating and challenging myself, and learning new things. And the feeling of accomplishment, knowing that you went from nothing, to something. Something that can be in the lives of others. Something the world can see. That's what counts to me.
Thank you for reading thus far.
Thanks to all the other challengers in the Jam, you've given me something to work towards. A challenge to rise up against and conquer. A goal we both have, that forces us to learn. Thank you for that. It is what has, and will continue to, teach me new things.
Have a great day.
